Ephesians 6:14-20
14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.
You may have seen pictures of Roman soldiers. They seem quite ancient from a modern perspective. But, if you were to see such a soldier, even today, you would be impressed.
These soldiers were able to project the power of the Roman government across the known world. Their equipment was state of the art. From their armor to their weaponry, they were a terrifying sight to those who opposed them.
St. Paul used this imagery, of what was, to most people in that day a terrifying foe, to describe God power to defend them against all evil. He teaches us to dress in God’s armor and to enter battle fearlessly so that we will remain faithful in our calling.
In our day and age we have many terrifying enemies. But, our God-given armor is still up to the challenge. God protects our faith and gives us strength to stand firm in Him. He will not let us fall, but give us everything that we need to sustain us to eternal life.
Our Savior Jesus, who suffered the worst of this world and our sins on the cross, will not run from any challenge that we may face today. Trust in Him. Receive the forgiveness of your sins and the strength to follow in His path to life everlasting.
Let us pray,
I thank you Lord Jesus for continuing to guard and protect your people. Help me to find security and comfort in your care. Remind me of your promises in my baptism. Help your church to be faithful in sharing your gifts and gospel both here and around the world. In your name I pray, AMEN.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
